Frequently asked questions

Does Kin track my location in the background?

No. Kin uses foreground location only — we capture your location while the app is open and you're actively using it. When you close the app, location updates stop entirely.

Can I hide my exact location?

Yes. In Settings → Privacy choose Exact, Approximate (jittered within roughly 500 m), or Off. You can change this at any time, and Approximate is enough for nearby discovery without revealing your precise spot.

Who can see my posts and hangouts?

Each post has a privacy setting: Public (any user), Friends (only accepted friends), Group (members of a specific group conversation you pick), or Private (only you). You can set a default in Settings and override it per post.

How do recurring hangouts work?

When you create a hangout you can toggle a repeat pattern (daily, weekly, every two weeks, or monthly) and an optional end date. Kin automatically creates the next instance when the current one ends, so a weekly farmers' market only needs to be posted once. Edits to a future instance apply to that instance only.

What is Encounters and how is it different from the rest of the app?

Encounters is an optional, opt-in 18+ matching feature. You set preferences (gender, what you're looking for, interests, distance, age range) and we surface a small curated batch of matches each day. After a 48-hour window, both people decide if they want to be friends, suggest a date, or move on. Encounters is hidden by default; enable it from Settings → Encounters.

What happens to my data when I delete my account?

Your profile, posts, events, media, and Encounters profile are removed from our database within 30 days. Messages already delivered to a conversation may remain in other participants' histories. Anonymised or aggregated data that no longer identifies you may be retained.

How do I block or unblock someone?

Tap the three-dot menu on a profile or post and choose Block. Blocked users can't see you on the map, in the feed, or message you. To unblock, go to Settings → Privacy → Blocked users and remove them.

What languages does Kin support?

The app interface is available in English, Spanish, and Korean. We pick the closest match to your device language at first launch; you can switch from Settings → Language. User-generated content (posts, messages) is not auto-translated.

I'm an admin — how do I suggest a translation fix?

Toggle Translation edit mode in Settings → Admin. Long-press any wrapped string in the app to open a suggestion modal pre-filled with the i18n key. Another admin approves your proposal in Settings → Translations → Pending, and the fix applies to every device on the next launch — no app rebuild needed.

Why didn't my post show up after submitting?

Posts pass through an automated keyword filter on submission. If your content matches a hard-block term it is rejected and you'll see a toast explaining that. Borderline content is published but flagged for admin review. If you believe your post was flagged in error, email [email protected].

Does Kin have a web version?

Not yet. Kin is currently mobile-only for iOS and Android. This site is the marketing landing page; user accounts live entirely in the app.

Where can I find the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy?

Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are linked at the bottom of every page on this site and from within the app under Settings.
